HEALDSBURG BOYS & GIRLS CLUB
The project preserves the legacy of the Healdsburg Boys & Girls Club thru a thoughtful rebuild and refresh of the local Clubhouse and Gym. The Club remains an integral part of the character of the North edge of downtown Healdsburg, with connections to adjacent public parks, neighboring schools, and residential zones. The design of the Clubhouse is particular to the setting. The new building features a welcoming front porch entry which gives a strong sense of arrival. Bay window elements contribute to the interest and residential character of the architecture, while giving space for occupants to engage with the building at its edge. The window seats provide unique vantage points of the protected mature Oaks which line the site’s East edge and reinforce “eyes-on” safe and observable space along the project arrival at the main entry. Views and connections to the West are enhanced by the addition of a large, covered activity porch facing Recreation Park and serving to further define the park’s perimeter in turn.
Simple architectural ordering, classic feel of the project details, and warm colors and materials further the intent of the design to connect with the setting. Expressive wood and steel structural elements and natural-finished wood ceiling put the building composition on display for youth to see and experience throughout. Interior activity spaces and functions are arranged around the central “Hub” which maintains good sightlines to each space. Healthy and durable interior material choices are central to the ethic of the project. Covered paved areas at each building entry function as mini courtyards and provide places of social interaction and exchange, places to see neighbors for a moment and help build a sense of community. In total, the project builds community presence while providing scaled, familiar, and comfortable structures and spaces for the young occupants, their families and staff.
