PROJECT: ROLLING OAKS RESIDENCE
We are excited to share new photography of a residence completed at the end of last year. The family home is a rebuild of a home lost to the Tubbs fire of October, 2017. The area was again threatened by the Kincade fire of 2019, then this year by smoke from the Walbridge fire, then the Glass fire which caused damage very near to the site. We have been so impressed by the owner's courage during all of this adversity. We hope the spaces of the new home can bring respite and cal

STUDIO VIEW: SPACE MAKING
Early in design phases we work with clients to seek a balance between functional needs and volumetric considerations for each space. The images here depict a design in progress for a main living area and kitchen within a new home. The digital design work gives us a framework for the design choices to follow. From these visualizations and other inspiration, we will next identify material, color and detail that reinforce project goals and ambitions. At the same time, the simple

DETAILS: HOME STRETCH
Details of the Rolling Oaks residence are coming together as the project is nearing completion. Here is a preview of a few moments where project materials come together. The house is connected to the landscape and the details and finishes support the color and warmth found in the setting. Some of the furniture is now arriving and the house is beginning to feel like home. We are very happy for our client and their family and anticipate a complete move-in in the next few weeks!

REBUILDING: FRAMING VIEWS
The Bennett Ridge Residence is progressing nicely. The photos here show current construction progress. Framed views of the landscape are taking shape, including those from the main living area capturing the surrounding trees and oak woodlands, as well as the master bedroom vista of the Valley of the Moon (Sonoma Valley). We're excited to see what's next for this hilltop post-fire rebuild project. #Design #Architecture #Newproject #Construction #Rebuilding

REBUILDING: CONSTRUCTION VIEWS
Views of recent construction progress on a new residence near Santa Rosa. The original home was lost to the Tubbs fire of October, 2017. The view from the new living room is taking shape. It captures Bennett Peak and Taylor Mountain where the northwest outlet of Sonoma Valley (image left) joins the Santa Rosa Plain (image right). We are thankful to work in this beautiful place with amazing clients. #Construction #Design #Architecture #Rebuilding

STUDIO VIEW: REBUILDING 2
This project design is a rebuild of a residence lost to the Tubbs fire in Sonoma County during October, 2017. The new plan simplifies the previous multi-level layout by placing the family's living spaces on a single level. The arrangement captures views of the farm and valley below. The project is beginning construction now and we're hoping our client will be able to return home soon. Sometimes building means more. #Architecture #Design #Construction #Interiors

DETAIL: VINTAGE DISPLAY
The idea was simple, to display an array of vintage milk cans within Clover Stornetta's new reception space. The historic and hidden-away milk cans are fantastic and varied - they didn't need much added, just an opportunity to see the light. Starting with a quick sketch and a simple diagram, the idea became possible in collaboration with the steel fabricator Schnitzkraft and the client. Schnitzkraft realized the design, composing the 3 custom shelving units from bent, raw pla

MATERIAL : RECLAIMED OAK
It's always great to see our projects under construction. After all, making ideas real is our fundamental motivation. This new interior uses natural materials to emphasize our client's historical connection to the setting. In particular, a reclaimed oak, salvaged from fences and buildings brings character to the space. Beautifully dyed and polished concrete flooring and the building's raw steel structure left bare complement the wood siding. The wood is 100% post-consumer rec

DETAIL : STEEL - FRAMED
One detail from our recently revived corporate cafeteria interior in Sonoma County, is the addition of three open meeting pods. Framed in structural steel and glass, the pods provide food-friendly and media-rich meeting space for staff and guests. Visual connections to the outdoors are maintained through minimal detailing and light-weight structure. Untreated steel and wood finishes give the spaces regional character. Many thanks go to the builders and steel fabricator who in

WARRIORS ARENA
As the Warriors head into their second NBA finals game tonight, just thought I'd share a few images of Snohetta Architects original vision for their San Francisco arena. The design was release back in late 2012 and went through a few updates in the months that followed. The affect that the pier location near the Bay Bridge could have been profound for the City. The idea of a 360-degree wrap-around public veranda with access to Bay, Bridge and City is simple and ingenious. The
